As we approach Nurses' Day 2025, on 12 May 2025, we are hosting an inspiring opportunity for healthcare professionals across South Africa, an online workshop titled "Real-World Applications of the Pregnancy and Substance Use Toolkit." This interactive session will focus on the importance of introducing training tools to the training of nurses and healthcare providers, such as the Pregnancy and Substance Use Toolkit. The Call for Enhanced Training The healthcare landscape is evolving rapidly, and the importance of investing in nursing education cannot be overstated. Proper training ensures that nurses are equipped to deliver appropriate healthcare services, particularly in sensitive areas such as prenatal care. By incorporating the Pregnancy and Substance Use Toolkit into training programmes, we empower nurses to provide informed, compassionate care to pregnant individuals. Spotlight on Key Speakers Our workshop boasts a diverse panel of speakers, each bringing unique expertise and insights. They will share valuable knowledge drawn from their experiences, enhancing the learning experience for all participants. ![]() Rebecca Coetzee Rebecca Coetzee is a Registered Nurse and lecturer in the Division of Clinical Associates at Wits University. With over a decade of clinical experience specialising in child and adolescent psychiatric nursing, Rebecca’s passion for education and community service shines brightly. She is committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals who appreciate the nuances of caring for vulnerable populations. In her session, Rebecca will address the critical topic of “Violence from Nurses During Labour and Perinatal Care.” She will shed light on the alarming realities of gender-based violence during childbirth, particularly concerning individuals who use drugs. Through her work, she seeks to promote an environment where every patient feels safe and respected, transforming the way care is delivered in sensitive situations. ![]() Sister Meth Joining Rebecca is Sister Meth, a Professional Nurse at TBHIV CARE in Umbilo. Sister Meth has dedicated her career to providing holistic services to people who use drugs (PWUD). Her role encompasses services like opioid agonist therapy (OAT), tuberculosis screening, HIV treatment, and overall health management. Her extensive experience with pregnant women who use drugs positions her as an invaluable source of knowledge. During the workshop, Sister Meth will share her personal experiences and insights on the importance of prenatal care tailored for pregnant individuals grappling with substance use. ![]() Julie Mac Donnell Julie Mac Donnell is another pivotal speaker at the workshop. With a solid background in health care, human rights, and harm reduction, Julie has worked tirelessly to support vulnerable women and priority population groups, particularly in rural areas. For over 12 years, she has been a champion for harm reduction and addiction care, serving on the board of directors for organisations like STAND Action and the Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre. Her experience with various organisations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Harm Reduction International, and INTERPOL. Building a Community of Support The "Real-World Applications of the Pregnancy and Substance Use Toolkit" workshop is more than a learning opportunity—it's a chance to build a supportive community among nursing professionals. By sharing experiences and best practices, we can collectively elevate the standard of care provided to pregnant individuals facing substance use challenges.
