The complex realities of homelessness in Durban’s central districts, from Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street to the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, continue to draw urgent attention from residents, businesses, community organisations, and city leadership alike. City officials agree that the issue of homelessness is more than a matter of policing or relocation. The Safer Cities Unit, notes that addressing the needs of Durban’s estimated 16,000 homeless residents requires deep cooperation and a new policy approach.

This spirit of partnership now finds vibrant expression in the upcoming Nina Manzi Wellness Day at Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre in Greyville, organised by Advance Access & Delivery South Africa (AA&D SA) on 18 June 2025. At its heart, the event recognises that healing and trust are built not through isolation, but through shared experiences and renewed connections between the local community and the homeless people alike. “The relationship between local communities and people experiencing homelessness in the Durban central area is fraught with complexities that often breed misunderstanding and animosity. This can lead to victimisation and discrimination against some of the most vulnerable among us,” says Londeleka Mgwaba emphasising Bellhaven’s commitment to creating bridges of inclusion, compassion, and dignity.

Beyond a day of festivities, Nina Manzi Wellness Day is a vital community effort tailored to remove social and economic obstacles that so often hinder access to basic hygiene and healthcare. For many, the barriers to services like grooming, primary care, and social support are real and persistent. This event tears down those barriers—if only for a day—by throwing open Bellhaven’s doors to every resident and client in the surrounding area. The staff and volunteers stand ready, not only to provide essential wellness services but to foster trust, understanding, and lasting engagement.

The participants will be greeted by an atmosphere of warmth and music. They will receive wellness packs—generously donated by St Mary’s DSG High School—containing essentials for hygiene and personal care. Meanwhile, Bellhaven’s team offers haircuts for men and nail care for women, and health professionals from the Durban University of Technology provide immediate consultations and TB screenings, thus ensuring critical health needs are addressed. Additionally, the renowned Nina Manzi showers are available, allowing guests to enjoy moments of comfort and self-care. Guests and hosts share a nutritious meal, thereby strengthening community bonds and fostering a sense of togetherness.
