Ahead of our impactful service provision in 2024, the South African Network of People Who Use Drugs (SANPUD) embarked on a critical site visit aimed at refining and advancing our strategies and services. This deep dive was a necessary pause to reflect, reevaluate, and recharge our efforts towards supporting the community of people who use drugs in South Africa. Through this introspective approach, we not only guarantee relevant support but also foster solid partnerships with other networks and service providers, creating a comprehensive support framework.

During the SANPUD 2024 site visit's initial phase, the team engaged in a thorough assessment, applauding our achievements, and critically identifying areas where we could improve. A pivotal element of these discussions entailed evaluating our current slew of activities and services for potential enhancements. With a relentless focus on efficiency, adaptability, and innovation, we stirred towards strengthening our administrative scaffolding to adeptly respond to the evolving needs of our community.

Our sessions, infused with forward-thinking methodologies, concentrated on devising an articulate plan for the year ahead. We carefully shaped our plan to match our funders' goals, creating a range of activities that are thorough and thoughtfully planned out as well as resonate deeply with and directly benefit the community of people who use drugs.

The importance of implementing a robust referral process was highlighted in our discussions, leading to valuable contributions from the team. These suggestions, steeped in practicality and outcome orientation, are set to streamline the conduit of services. Moreover, we delved into fortifying our advocacy efforts, proposing pragmatic solutions designed to establish harmonious ties between people who use drugs and the communities from which they come.

Our visit concluded with an invaluable two-day training period centred on professional growth, shaping our team to be more effective communicators and persuasive presenters, critical for accurate representation and advocacy. The sessions included human Rights & Advocacy Strategizing where the five overarching human rights principles, the International Human Standards, and the FAIR approach—Facts, Analysis, Identifying responsibilities, and Review of actions—were discussed. Tailored advocacy implementation plans for community issues were developed for each city. In addition, the training delved into the growing trend of chemsex, equipping our team to tackle these concerns proactively. This bolstered not only individual capabilities but also our collective unity, reinforcing the team dynamic. Such preparedness is crucial for us to propel SANPUD's mission in the upcoming year.

SANPUD's site visit laid the groundwork for a transformative 2024—enhancing services, forging partnerships, and empowering our team to better serve and advocate for the community we support.
